The Speech that made Dr. Ben Carson a Conservative Icon and a Liberal Pariah

Dr. Ben Carson has long been admired for his brilliance and his talent as a neurosurgeon. He is a best-selling author, and one of his books, Gifted Hands, was made into a movie starring Cuba Gooding, Jr. as Dr. Carson. People of all political stripes look up to him because of his personal story as well. It’s one that shows how hard work coupled with talent can take a person anywhere he wants to go.

But as Dr. Carson spoke at the National Prayer Breakfast in 2013, he suddenly became a political star as well. Conservatives seized upon his speech – agreeing wholeheartedly with almost every word he said. To liberals, he immediately became anathema as one who would disrespect the President at such an austere event. Here is that powerful speech that introduced many of us to Dr. Carson’s “logical” political belief system.
