St. Petersburg, Russia is suffering this morning after what was likely yet another Muslim terrorist attack.

An explosion was heard ripping through the St. Petersburg transit system during the afternoon commute (early morning hours here in the USA). The explosion killed at least 10 people and dozens of others were injured. The Russian government is already calling this an “attack,” but has not yet confirmed  what “kind” of attack it may be. Russian President, Vladimir Putin, has told Russian media that while a terrorist attack is the likely culprit and it will be investigators first line of inquiry it was just too soon to confirm any speculation.

From CNN:

“The reasons for the explosion are unknown, so it’s too early to talk about it. The investigation will show what happened,” Putin said, beginning a meeting with Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko.

“Naturally, we always consider all options — both domestic and criminal, primarily incidents of a terrorist nature.”

From the Moscow Times:

At least ten people have died following an explosion on the St. Petersburg Metro.

Russian officials confirmed that one explosion had taken place at the city’s Tekhnologicheskiy Institut metro station at approximately 2:30 P.M. local time.

Initial reports suggested that a second device had exploded on a metro car at the Sennaya Ploshchad station. Police later clarified that one smoke had been seen in the area.

A third, unexploded device has reportedly also been found at the city’s Ploshchad Vosstaniya station.

A spokesperson for the governor of St. Petersburg, Andrei Kibitov, confirmed that at least 10 people had died and at least 50 had been injured.
