GOP Senator Says Senate Could Block Trump’s Nominations for Secretary of State

President-elect Trump has been making headlines recently with rumors of his cabinet appointments. Former UN Ambassador John Bolton, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, and even former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney have been considered for Secretary of State.

Alabama Representative [score]Jeff Sessions[/score] has already accepted Trump’s nomination for Attorney General; Kansas Representative [score]Mike Pompeo[/score] will be Trump’s pick for CIA director; and Lieutenant General Michael Flynn has been officially tapped as national security advisor.

But that’s only one part of the process. The President nominates, and the Senate has to confirm with a simple majority. The Senate does have a slight Republican majority, but one Senator says that he’ll have enough votes not to confirm either Giuliani or John Bolton for Secretary of State. He sits on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, chaired by Sen. [score]Bob Corker[/score].

“I’ll tell you something I haven’t told anybody else: I’ve had some conversations with some other Republican senators, and I’m not the only one with misgivings over both Giuliani and Bolton.

“And I haven’t met a Democrat that supports either of them, but I’ve met several Republicans that aren’t. With the 52-48 majority, all it would take is two or three Republicans to say they can’t go along with Giuliani, and can’t go along with Bolton. And I think there are some that I think would sail through — I think Sen. Corker would sail through. I’ve probably met 15 Democrats in the last two day that said they would vote for his confirmation. But they are very, very worried about Bolton…

“Giuliani is a great friend of the president-elect. Maybe there could be another position in the cabinet that weren’t putting him in a place where he is at odds with the president’s vision on foreign policy.”
