If you listen to the news media or scan online headlines from national networks, they’ll tell you that Trump’s transition team is in turmoil, that there’s a lot of infighting going on, that it’s way behind schedule (never mind the fact that it wasn’t until December 1, 2008 until Obama had named his secretary of state, attorney general and other top appointments), and that it’s a great big chaotic mess. Here are just a few:
I was listening to Erick Erickson the other day, and he brought this up. He mentioned how the one thing that many of the news reports had in common was lobbyists.
It was recently announced that Trump and his team are putting a five-year ban on lobbyists working for his administration. From Breitbart:
The ban was announced by Trump transition team official Sean Spicer, who stated that each member of the administration would be required to sign a form stating that they would not be a lobbyist.
Spicer added that registered federal or state lobbyists would not be allowed to serve in the Trump administration, but did not explicitly mention former lobbyists.
“It goes back to Mr. Trump’s goal of making sure that people aren’t using government to enrich themselves,” Spicer said on a conference call with reporters.
The lobbyists are being booted out.
How do you think that makes the lobbyists feel? They’ve been the ones to run the show for so long, using previous presidential administrations the same way that foreign dignitaries used the Clinton Foundation when Hillary was secretary of state. It was a pay-to-play scheme, and it’s everywhere in Washington. But the Trump administration isn’t allowing it.
Lobbyists are obviously mad. All these reports of “chaos” and “turmoil” are originating from D.C. publications, where Trump’s transition team isn’t even headquartered. Trump and his team are still up in New York City.
Lobbyists are realizing that they won’t have the influence over the executive branch like they used to. Now they’re embittered and are complaining to the press, and trying to make the whole thing look like a giant mess. And of course the media is eating it right up.
