Foreign leaders will work with their counterparts of all political stripes and persuasions – they have to – because every nation has a diverse and different electorate than their neighbors. However, sometimes world political leaders have the opportunity to work with leaders who have similar ideologies, similar political realities, and similar interests. It’s in these relationships that we often see alliances flourish. For years, and through many political shifts, the United States has counted on nations like Canada, Britain, and Israel because of the unique relationship we shared with them. However, the partnership with Israel has been under some heavy strain in recent years due to the Obama administration’s decision to align itself more closely with Israel’s enemies.
Now that season of stress may be over.
With the election of Donald Trump, Israel has a true friend in the White House, and with GOP majorities in the House and Senate, Israel can be sure of America’s full support.
This reality could be seen in the message of congratulations that Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, recently sent to President-Elect Donald Trump.
“President-elect Trump, my friend, congratulations on being elected President of the United States of America.
“You are a great friend of Israel, over the years you’ve expressed your support consistently, and I deeply appreciate it.
“I look forward to working with you to advance security, prosperity and peace. Israel is grateful for the broad support it enjoys among the American people, and I am confident that the two of us working closely together will bring the great alliance between our two countries to even greater heights.
“May God bless America, may God bless Israel, may God bless our enduring alliance.”
For his part, Mr. Trump has promised to defend Israel and to cherish the relationship that our two nations hold so dear.
Trump’s VP, Mike Pence, explained the importance of our friendship with Israel while doubling down on the campaign’s promise to stand with Israel in the fight against radical Islamist terrorism.
The message from both sides of the world is clear, the United States of America and Israel are partners in peace and prosperity and will be for the foreseeable future. As VP-elect Pence so eloquently said,
“We stand with Israel because Israel’s fight is our fight, because Israel’s cause is our cause…
We stand with Israel because her cause is just, because her values are our values, and because her fate is our fate…
Israel is not hated by her enemies for what she does wrong, but rather for what she does right…
If the world knows nothing else, the world will know this, America stands with Israel…”
