Trump Names his Chief of Staff

Written by Leonora Cravotta

President-elect Donald Trump has tapped Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairperson Reince Priebus as his Chief of Staff. The selection of Priebus for the chief of staff post comes as no surprise as Priebus’s name has been floating as being on the short list since Trump’s Election Day victory. Political analysts took note of Trump’s thoughtful praise of Priebus during his victory speech as an indicator that Priebus would be playing a key role in the Trump administration.

The role of chief of staff is probably one of the most important roles in a presidential administration as that individual is essentially the gatekeeper to the president. The chief of staff decides who meets with the president and which policy briefs land on his desk.

The chief of staff is also the individual who has the most day-to-day direct contact with the president. Consequently, it is imperative that the president select a chief of staff with whom he has good personal chemistry.

Much speculation has gone into what approach Trump would take with filling this critical position. Would he go with a Washington insider like Priebus? Or would he go with a Washington outsider such as Stephen Bannon, his campaign’s CEO and former chairperson of the conservative website Breitbart? Trump who selected Bannon as his Chief Strategist and Senior Counselor, clearly opted to go with the insider candidate strategy.

Trump’s decision to go the insider route with his chief of staff pick is yet another indicator that he realizes that he needs to create a team which is a melange of insiders who intimately know the inner workings of DC and outsiders with innovative initiatives to improve the lives of the American people, fix broken processes and eliminate waste and corruption.

Less than five days since his landmark election victory, Donald Trump has lost no time in demonstrating to the American people that he is ready to hit the ground running.
