Back in April, Hillary Clinton was speaking on the gender pay gap, and said, “Last time I checked, there’s no discount for being a woman.” Well, unless you worked for the Clinton Foundation.
While the Clinton Foundation could boast about their gender diversity – they employed more women than men at the time – they paid their female employees less on average than their male employees, WikiLeaks emails reveal.
The spreadsheet included 62 employees, 37 women and 25 men. It did not include people who received money from the foundation as contractors. The top-paid employee on the list was senior adviser Justin Cooper, who was pulling in $127,000. The lowest-paid employee was a female assistant making $18,000.
The spreadsheet referenced by LifeZette was a payroll schedule sent to John Podesta and board chairman Bruce Lindsey regarding 2012 salary recommendations for foundation employees.
This is significant considering that Donald Trump was criticized for paying men on his campaign staff more than he paid women.
To be perfectly honest, I don’t actually care that Clinton Foundation female employees were paid less than the male employees. I don’t think there was any discrimination going on. Employees shouldn’t be paid more or less just because of their gender. They should be paid based on how valuable their job is to the employer.
The same goes for Donald Trump and his staffers.
But if the Clinton campaign is going to use this for political gain, then they should expect people to point out the stark contradictions. Of course, we also know that Hillary Clinton has policy opinions she holds in private and those she holds in public. In private, I don’t think she cares about the supposed gender pay gap. But in public, it’s a centerpiece for her campaign.
