According to authorities, 20-year-old Wasil Farooqui attempted to behead one of his victims in a knife attack in Roanoke, Virginia over the weekend. The incident is being billed by federal authorities as a possible ISIS-inspired terrorist attack. Witnesses recount hearing Farooqui yell, “Allahu Akbar!” during the stabbing that left two people seriously injured.
It was Saturday night just before 8:00 when a man and a woman had entered an apartment building at The Pines and were confronted by Farooqui. Police say that he had attempted to behead the male victim.
The attacker was arrested and charged with “two counts of aggravated malicious wounding.” Officials believe that the attacker randomly chose his victims, as there is no known relation between the suspect and those he stabbed.
Fox News reported that the FBI is assisting local police in their investigation of the incident as a possible terrorist attack:

The FBI confirmed to Fox News it is investigating the dual stabbing alongside the Roanoke County Police Department. A source familiar with the case also told Fox News the FBI is investigating the attack as a possible terrorism-related incident.
“The FBI is working with the Roanoke County Police Department following the incident that occurred on Saturday evening,” said Adam Lee, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Richmond Division.
“While I cannot discuss details of the investigation at this time, I do want to reassure the community that we are working to determine the nature of the incident,” Lee said.
ABC News reported that federal investigators had had their eye on Farooqui for some time. They know that he had traveled to Turkey last year and may have tried to sneak into Syria to meet with ISIS leaders.
As of now, Farooqui is being held in the Western Virginia Regional Jail without bond. It’s not known whether he has legal representation.
