Representative Keith Ellison (D-MN) was on a radio program called Breaking Through, talking about gun control. Even though he said that “nobody’s trying to ban all guns,” he also said that he believes “we can ban these handguns.” So, I guess he means he’s not for banning all guns. Just most of them. Maybe shotguns are okay. Here’s what he said:
“You know, the fact is, it’s just too easy to get these weapons. And they’re dangerous, and we’ve got to get them off our streets. And it’s the only thing that makes sense. Nobody’s trying to ban all guns. You know, look, Canada – there’s plenty of guns in Canada. But they don’t kill each other, like 10,000 a year with handguns.
“I mean, the bottom line is there are meaningful things we can do to preserve life, and we’ve got to do it. And I’m on the side of Moms Rising, I believe we can ban these handguns. No-fly no-buy, universal background checks – fine. If no-fly no-buy has the proper due process. The bottom line is the status quo cannot be allowed to prevail.”
Moms Rising is a group that “takes on the most critical issues facing women, mothers, and families by educating the public and mobilizing massive grassroots actions,” according to their website. They cover issues ranging from maternity and paternity leave to universal healthcare, and from immigration to gun control. Their gun control agenda includes, but is not limited to the following:
- Criminal background checks for all gun purchases, including at gun shows and on the Internet.
- A ban on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.
- A federal anti-gun-trafficking statute with real penalties to crack down on straw purchases.
The more laws we have restricting, regulating, penalizing, and complicating the gun-buying process, the more difficult it is for law-abiding citizens to defend themselves, and the easier it is for criminals to take advantage of the laws and commit horrific acts.
