House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has accused the Republicans of refusing to “disarm hate” – their latest trite marketing campaign slogan – because they won’t support Democrat-sponsored gun control legislation.
Congress is in deadlock once again over gun control. The Democrats haven’t proposed anything that the Republicans would support, and gun control bills that Republicans have proposed are being blocked not only by the opposing Party, but by members of their own Party – namely the House Freedom Caucus.
The Democrats’ sit-in protest did little – except damage furniture – to convince Republicans to vote for their legislation that would have prohibited “suspected terrorists” on the no-fly list from obtaining firearms, as well as closing the [nonexistent] background check loophole.
In an attempt to appear compromising and willing to “reach across the aisle,” House Speaker Paul Ryan pushed a bill that would have made it difficult for suspected terrorists to obtain firearms. It would have barred them from purchasing weapons – legally anyway – but only if federal prosecutors could prove within three days that a terrorist attack was in the works.
In addition, according to ABC News, “The government would have to cover legal costs for people for whom it unsuccessfully tried to deny firearms.”
The GOP bill was opposed by the 40-member Freedom Caucus and the Democrats, and the bill has stalled, much to the dismay of Speaker Ryan who pushed it heavily.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi accused the GOP of refusing to “disarm hate”:
“The overwhelming majority of Americans want action to keep guns out of the hands of suspected terrorists and criminals. Real action – not a bill written by the gun lobby that they’re going to try to bring up today that will do nothing to keep our community safe, but the Republican House still refuse to disarm hate and allow a vote on common sense gun violence protection.”

The truth is that nothing will successfully “disarm hate” without disarming law-abiding citizens in the process. Do these Democrats – and Republicans for that matter – actually believe that any piece of legislation will convince a terrorist not to go through with their attack, just because it’s against the law? The law isn’t going to stand in the way of a terrorist who has nothing to lose.
