The American media’s bias against conservatives (and Republicans) is an ancient tale. It’s become such an ubiquitous story that it doesn’t even raise eyebrows anymore to suggest that the media has a left-wing bias. We’ve gone so far beyond the pale that respected newsmen are now freely admitting that the media is more liberal than society at large and “of course” that would paint the tenor and tone of their reporting. (BUT that doesn’t mean they’re biased!)
Do you want to know where this road leads?
To know where this story goes, take a look at Russia. Modern day Russia is a pseudo-democracy. They are pretending that they’ve left behind the trappings of communism and begun moving into a free market and free-political future. It’s all a ruse. A simple lie told to keep the people pacified. Communism is alive and well in Russia, and the one thing that could have allowed freedom and popular rule to flourish — the media — was chained down by the government it should have been decrying.
Now Vladimir Putin has dissolved the official state-run media and formed a new even more pro-Putin propaganda wing.
The move to abolish RIA Novosti and create a news agency to be known as Rossiya Segodnya is the second in two weeks strengthening Putin’s hold on the media as he tries to reassert his authority after protests against his rule.
Most Russian media outlets are already loyal to Putin, and opponents get little air time, but the shake-up underlined their importance to Putin keeping power and the Kremlin’s concern about the president’s ratings and image.
This is the exact opposite of what the media should be doing. When the media is nothing but a propaganda machine for the government, it is a clear sign that you live in a despotic regime where the people are ruled over and not where the people rule.
Back home in the United States, the media is oblivious to this danger.
The reason that the First Amendment exists is to ensure that the government cannot chain down the free speech of the people, like the government of Russia is currently doing. Sadly, our visionary founding fathers could not make provision against a media that CHOOSES to propagandize for the government. They couldn’t know that one political persuasion would come to dominate the field of journalism making clear-minded and balanced reporting… difficult. How could they foresee that?
Can we convince our “respectable” schools of journalism to make a change? Can we convince our journalists that they must always be in “attack mode” no matter which political party is in charge?
In our modern technological age the government is trying to restrict First Amendment protections to “real” journalists through something called the “media shield law.” We’ve discussed those at length here, here and here, but the basic point is that media shield laws are bad for our liberties. They turn certain journalists into a protected class but leave the rest of us unprotected from government harassment if we say the wrong things. And perhaps this is another reason the left is pushing so hard for a media shield law…
The left knows that the media is for them. It is conservatives like us, blogging away on the internet, who pose the real threat to their ivory towered palace. If the left can shut down the free speech of the people while protecting the speech of the journalist class – they will have, in essence, done to us what Putin has done in Russia.
The only difference will be that the Russian media was forced into their corner; the American media has chosen it.
The First Amendment is vital to the survival of a truly free people. If we don’t have the freedom of speech, then every other supposed freedom is also void. Folks, I urge you to stand up and fight with us for everyone’s freedom of speech. Call your representatives and tell them that everyone’s free speech should be equally protected and that our freedom of speech should be absolute! Call your local newspapers and media outlets, call the major media outlets that you read, watch and/or listen to. Demand from them unbiased balanced reporting. Demand from them that they be always pressing against those in leadership positions, whether or not they agree with them.
Our media may be liberal – but we must recognize that they are vital to our liberty. If the media is not free, then we will be lost.
