Last Saturday in Las Vegas something happened that we all probably saw coming. Michael Sandford, a British citizen who has been living in Southern California, attempted to assassinate GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump.
Sandford grabbed the handle of a gun that was holstered to the side of a police officer, hoping to wrest it from the cop and then fire one or two shots at Mr. Trump. Sandford has admitted to trying to kill the presidential candidate and has also acknowledged that he believed he would be killed during the commission of the attack.
The man arrested for trying to disarm a police officer inside a Donald Trump rally in Las Vegas Saturday told authorities he intended to use the gun “to kill Trump,” according to a new criminal complaint.
Police arrested the 19-year-old after he attempted to pull a police officer’s gun from its holster inside a Las Vegas theater where Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, was holding a campaign rally…
Sanford told police that he drove to Las Vegas from California “to kill Trump,” according to the complaint, after hearing a few days earlier in the news that he was expected there. On June 17, he practiced shooting a gun for the first time at a gun range in Las Vegas.
“Sanford further stated that if he were on the street tomorrow, he would try this again,” reads the complaint, obtained by CNN. “Sandford claimed he had been planning to kill Trump for about a year but decided to act on this occasion because he finally felt confident about trying it.”
Sanford also told authorities that had he not tried to assassinate Trump at the Las Vegas event, he had planned to go to his next rally, in Phoenix, Arizona, and try again there.
Of course, this specific attack is not the fault of the media or of the liberals who have been fomenting violence against Trump for months. However, both the media and the left have been agitating against the GOP candidate for some time, and many have been openly speculating about violence against the man and his supporters. This constant conversation about opposition to Trump’s candidacy has bred a climate that has allowed protests to become violent, and now we’ve had our first known assassination attempt against a presidential candidate in decades. This should be a moment of introspection for the media and Trump’s liberal opposition. But they’ll likely ignore the implications and continue to exacerbate the scary climate that seems to have taken hold of the 2016 race.
