Liberal College Drops Math Requirement, May Introduce Diversity Requirement!

Written by Onan Coca

If you’d like a to understand the collapse of American education a little bit better, then you could not find a better example than the folks at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.

The brilliant folks leading the way at Wayne State have pushed the school in an… interesting new direction. Specifically, the schools leaders have decided to stop forcing students to study basic level college math. Which in and of itself is a completely ridiculous step for a liberal arts college, but these “leaders” made things even worse with their next suggestion.

“We are proposing the creation of specific ‘Diversity’ courses, with students required to take one course in this designation. These courses will provide opportunities for students to explore diversity at the domestic level and consider the ways in which it intersects with real world challenges at the local, national and/or global level.”

So, instead of requiring students to learn more math and then prove their competency in basic math skills… they think their students would be better served by taking a “diversity” class. And before you ask, yes, Wayne State University is in metropolitan (and diverse) Detroit, Michigan.

Not all educators are thrilled with the move. Ashley Thorne is the executive director of the National Association of Scholars seemed stunned that a liberal arts college would take such odd action.

“Colleges and universities use general education requirements to ensure that students learn the subjects it deems most important. Wayne State University’s decision to drop math and add diversity to its requirements reveals that its leaders do not have their priorities straight.

Mathematical ability is an objective and practical skill that will serve students the rest of their lives, which is why it has traditionally been a core part of college curricula. ‘Diversity’ is not an academic subject. It is a concept invented to classify people by their social identities. Focusing on individuals’ race, ethnicity, sex, and sexuality in this way has been demonstrated to lead to racial animus, segregation, stigmas, discrimination, and poor academic performance. It also politicizes education,” Thorne told the Michigan Capitol Confidential.

Ms. Thorne is exactly right. Wayne State has sold its educational soul to please their politically correct liberal masters and their decisions shouldn’t surprise us. This is the direction that liberal academia has been shifting for years and it won’t be long before more colleges begin dumping academic subjects to focus on political ideology. The question is… what will you do with your children then?
