Count Target among the liberal businesses that no longer feel the need to do business with the conservative majority in our country. After the recent spate of religious freedom/transgender bathroom debates that ended with North Carolina’s decision to legislate single-sex bathrooms, Target has announced that they will be moving to make all of their restrooms “genderless.”
Recent debate around proposed laws in several states has reignited a national conversation around inclusivity. So earlier this week, we reiterated with our team members where Target stands and how our beliefs are brought to life in how we serve our guests.

Inclusivity is a core belief at Target. It’s something we celebrate. We stand for equality and equity, and strive to make our guests and team members feel accepted, respected and welcomed in our stores and workplaces every day.
We believe that everyone—every team member, every guest, and every community—deserves to be protected from discrimination, and treated equally. Consistent with this belief, Target supports the federal Equality Act, which provides protections to LGBT individuals, and opposes action that enables discrimination.
In our stores, we demonstrate our commitment to an inclusive experience in many ways. Most relevant for the conversations currently underway, we welcome transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity.
We regularly assess issues and consider many factors such as impact to our business, guests and team members. Given the specific questions these legislative proposals raised about how we manage our fitting rooms and restrooms, we felt it was important to state our position.
Everyone deserves to feel like they belong. And you’ll always be accepted, respected and welcomed at Target.
Everyone deserves to feel like they belong? So the .3% of the country that identifies as transgender is more important, and their feelings more valuable, than the vast majority (some 97%) of Americans who identify as their traditional (and biological) gender?
What about me, Target? I would feel very uncomfortable (like I don’t belong), and like I am not being accepted, respected, or welcomed at your stores if I was forced to use the same bathroom as a woman, no matter what sex she identified herself as. Moreover, how would I protect my children from possible abuse if I’m at a store without their mother and they need to use the facilities? This, above all else, discomforts me. I worry that my children will now have a new danger (as if there aren’t enough of them out there already) that I will have to consider as we live our lives.
By the way, this is the same Target that said this about their decision to ban guns not too long ago: “This is a complicated issue, but it boils down to a simple belief: Bringing firearms to Target creates an environment that is at odds with the family-friendly shopping and work experience we strive to create.” I’m not sure what happened with their “family friendly shopping” experience, but I think someone forgot to tell them that being forced to worry even more about your children’s safety was not exactly helping the family friendliness. Now, in Target, I’m not supposed to carry my firearm (with which I protect my family), and I’m supposed to let my little girls use the restroom with grown men?
Let’s just make one thing clear: Target is the opposite of family friendly.
Your new policy is misguided and illogical, Target, and as such I can no longer patronize any of your stores.
