West Virginia Strikes a Blow for Freedom – Legislature Overrides the Governor’s Veto on Gun Rights!

The West Virginia state legislature struck a blow for freedom this past weekend by overriding Governor Earl Ray Tomblin’s (D-WV) veto of a bill that would allow constitutional carry in their state. Governor Tomblin attempted to stifle the freedoms of the people of West Virginia by vetoing a bill that would allow citizens of the state to carry concealed firearms without a permit. Tomblin defended his dictatorial actions by claiming to know what is best for everyone else…

“West Virginia’s law enforcement officers have dedicated their lives to keeping us safe and helping us in times of need, and it’s disheartening that the members of the Legislature have chosen not to stand with these brave men and women – putting their safety and the safety of West Virginians at risk. It’s unfortunate that the concerns of officers from every law enforcement branch in the state, including the West Virginia State Police and university campus police officers, have been ignored by today’s action.”

While Tomblin tried to stop the march of freedom in West Virginia, the representatives of the people boldly stood against him. The state House overrode the veto 64-33 and the state Senate followed with a vote of 23-11. While the Governor may think that law abiding citizens aren’t responsible enough to exercise their God-given right to self-defense, the people of West Virginia obviously have a different opinion. Isn’t it nice when a republican system of government works as it should and the people override the fascist will of one man who wishes to rule by fiat (in this case, Tomblin)?

The legislation may be anathema to West Virginia’s liberals, but gun owners across the nation are exulting in the newly passed law.

Currently, it’s legal in West Virginia to carry a gun openly without a permit, like in a holster.

The bill would let people cover up guns in public without a permit; for instance, by wearing a coat. Under the proposal, people ages 18 through 20 would still need a permit and training with live firing.

Only a handful of states don’t require concealed carry permits.

The bill would increase penalties for felonies committed with a gun.

The bill would expand on the rights of citizens in West Virginia, something that the state’s Republican Attorney General hails as a huge win for liberty.

“As the chief legal officer of the state and the person in charge of criminal matters for the state at the WV Supreme Court and in federal courts, I know that this legislation will not impact public safety. If this bill is enacted, we will not only expand freedom, but we will keep our citizens protected.” West Virginia’s Republican Attorney General Patrick Morrissey said after the veto was announced.

This is a big win for freedom and every citizen of West Virginia should be proud of the good work their legislators have put in to expand the people’s freedom.
