How Much Does Bernie Want to Spend? How about $18 TRILLION in New Spending!?

I sat in stunned silence for several minutes after reading through Laura Meckler’s stunning analysis of Bernie Sanders’ many promised spending increases. A few months ago, I would have told you that Sanders’ nomination as the Democrat Party candidate was next to impossible… today, I’m not so sure. And that scares me.

[score]Bernie Sanders[/score] (I-VT) is a self-proclaimed socialist who makes no bones about his outrageous fiscal policy plans and proposals. In fact, unlike most other candidates in the history of our nation (other than maybe FDR and Huey Long), Sanders is counting on his exorbitant spending promises to win the election.

You probably already know all this. You’ve been watching him; you understand that he’s making big promises without actually laying out how he’d pay for these new entitlements, benefits and welfare hobbyhorses.

But you might not have realized just how much of your money Sanders was promising to give away.

In all, he backs at least $18 trillion in new spending over a decade, according to a tally by The Wall Street Journal, a sum that alarms conservatives and gives even many Democrats pause. Mr. Sanders sees the money as going to essential government services at a time of increasing strain on the middle class…

To pay for it, Mr. Sanders, a Vermont independent running for the Democratic nomination, has so far detailed tax increases that could bring in as much as $6.5 trillion over 10 years, according to his staff…

The Sanders program amounts to increasing total federal spending by about one-third—to a projected $68 trillion or so over 10 years…

More-centrist Democrats think it is a bad idea. “We are not a country that has limitless resources. You need to tamp on the brakes somewhere, but he doesn’t,” said Jim Kessler, senior vice president for policy at the Democratic think tank Third Way. “There’s no such thing as free college; somebody is going to be paying for it.”

Conservative economists say higher government spending would hurt long-term economic growth and that this much would stunt it altogether. “If we’re putting our resources into government, that’s a place where you’re not going to get productivity gains,” said Kevin Hassett, an American Enterprise Institute analyst who has advised many GOP presidential candidates but is unaffiliated this year. Mr. Hassett said the tax increases required to pay for the Sanders program would be “massively catastrophic.”

Catastrophic. I think that word best sums up what a Bernie Sanders presidency would be for the United States. Friends, we cannot allow this. Rally your friends, speak to your neighbors, call your relatives, get out there and defend our future from the calamitous economic policies of the new socialist Democrat Party. Our kids deserve a chance at understanding what prosperity is — don’t let Bernie and his welfare-loving minions rob them of that.
