“Obama’s better off smoking crack than passing Obamacare.” – Jay Leno
It’s taken years for anyone to start making fun of the President, but now it’s happening often and the zingers are hitting home. Monologues like this one are why Jay Leno is still top of the late-night heap. He was the first mainstream (non-conservative) comic to start making President Obama a punch line. Sure, maybe it didn’t happen as often as it did with President Bush, but at least Jay was willing to throw a few jabs at a Democrat every now and again.
That was more than the other late-night hacks could.
The American comedian cadre was sadly silent for the first five years of President Obama’s administration. After each new news cycle would go by with another Obama misstep, I would expect someone to begin making fun of what had happened … but they never did. It reminded me of the famous quote from the Enlightenment philosopher Voltaire, “To learn who rules over you, simply find out who you are not allowed to criticize.”
However, now that the scandals and failures are all piling up – they no longer have an excuse for avoiding satirizing him. So Saturday Night Live, Jon Stewart, David Letterman, Conan O’Brien and of course Jay Leno have all begun to turn their attention in his direction.
But Jay was first, and for that, many conservatives will give him their time, energy and thanks. If we are watching one of the late night shows, it’s probably going to be Jay Leno. Consider it payback for being willing to go after the little king.
All of that leads me to this recent Jay Leno monologue… which may very well be the best monologue in the history of late night television. Why, you ask? Mostly because Jay spends almost two minutes tearing apart our paper tiger prince. It’s about time someone laid this administration low – and Jay Leno is just the guy to do it.
Thanks, Jay, for bringing some sanity back to our political world. Our leaders should be made fun of, it’s how we keep balance. Our politicians aren’t our betters and someone needs to remind them of their place – they are our servants.
