Harry Reid Endorse Paul Ryan for Speaker – Paul Ryan Hides in Embarrassment

I think that Harry Reid’s latest move was meant more as a way to “rib” Paul Ryan (R-WI) than it was an actual endorsement of Ryan for Speaker, but it will still cause headaches for Ryan in the coming days.

Senate Minority leader Harry Reid (D-NV) was speaking with the press when he dropped a bit of a bomb on them and endorsed Paul Ryan for the job of Speaker of the House.

“He appears to me to be one of the people over there that would be reasonable. I mean look at some of the other people. I’m a Paul Ryan fan. I don’t agree with him on much of what he does. I think what he’s done with Medicare and Medicaid, what he’s wanted to do I disagree with. But generally speaking we’ve been able to work with him.”

Reid quite obviously relishes the discord within the Republican Party and knows that by offering a positive word on Ryan he can help to make the seas even rougher. Many of us conservatives will listen to what Reid says and then move to do the exact opposite out of sheer spite, but we need to recognize his comments for what they were… good-natured ribbing, and that’s all.

We cannot allow Harry Reid’s comments to influence us either way in our support for or against Paul Ryan. For me personally, while I believe Ryan to be a good man who means well, I cannot lend my support to him as Speaker. He is as moderate as Boehner on most issues, and even more liberal on illegal immigration and amnesty. We have a real opportunity to push for transformation in Congress with this change in Speaker, especially now that Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has been forced to bow out of the race, and we must take full advantage of it. We need the conservatives in the House to find ONE conservative that they can rally around and support as a bloc. Force the GOP establishment to choose either to work with conservatives or with Democrats on selecting the next Speaker. Now is the time for change, but we need a unified conservative caucus to get the job done.
