Breaking News

What We’re Reading October 8, 2015

We hope you’re having a great day wherever you are and that the news we dig up for you this morning helps you navigate the day more efficiently!

It’s a busy world out there, and you don’t have a ton of free time to be doing Internet searches for the most important items of the day… lucky for you, we do. We drink gallons of coffee in an effort to stay awake long enough to scour the far reaches of the world wide web in an effort to bring you the most important, useful and useless information every single day.

You’re welcome.

So without further ado, here’s what we’re reading, Thursday October 8, 2015.

Uh-oh. Things are getting tense in Syria as we have confirmation that the Russians have “engaged” our predator drones in the air over the embattled Mideast nation. In fact, the Russians have shadowed our drones on at least three separate occasions.

Joe Biden (D-DE) better get ready for a fight if he jumps into the presidential race because Hillary has her claws out and she will go straight for his throat.

Why does it seem that Israel is more interested in protecting America than our own leaders are?

There is absolutely ZERO correlation between state homicide rate and state gun laws.

The correlation between the homicide rate and Brady score in all 51 jurisdictions is +.032 (on a scale of -1 to +1), which means that states with more gun restrictions on average have very slightly higher homicide rates, though the tendency is so small as to be essentially zero. (If you omit the fatal gun accident rates, then the correlation would be +.065, which would make the more gun-restricting states look slightly worse; but again, the correlation would be small enough to be essentially zero, given all the other possible sources of variation.) If we use the National Journal data (adding the columns for each state, counting 1 for each dark blue, which refers to broad restrictions, 0.5 for each light blue, which refers to medium restrictions, and 0 for each grey, which refers to no or light restrictions), the results are similar: +0.017 or +0.051 if one omits the fatal gun accident rates. You can also run the correlation yourself on my Excel spreadsheet.

There’s a reason John Boehner (R-OH) pushed back the vote for the next Speaker of the House… no one has the votes yet to win.

Chris Christie (R-NJ) will soon be ending his time as New Jersey’s Governor and the Democrats have a couple of “real winners” lined up to take his place. And by “real winners” I mean something very unflattering…

Is the Democrat coalition falling apart?
