LETTER ON MATT DAMON’S VIEW OF GAY ACTORS
Matt Damon said, “Whether you’re straight or gay, people shouldn’t know anything about your sexuality because that’s one of the mysteries that you should be able to play. I think you’re a better actor the less people know about you, period.”
He is right and he is wrong. Your sexuality should not be a mystery. It should be fitting to your role. If you are a well- known gay it wouldn’t work for you to play a playboy with women or a rapist. You should play gay or neutral roles. And if you are a Hollywood heterosexual playboy, it would be comedic for you to play a gay.
If it doesn’t work for you to be what you be then stay in the closet and enjoy the freedom to play any role. I don’t want to see a gay playing a cowboy not even in “Brokeback Mountain.”
Anyhow, with ninety-nine per cent of the people being heterosexual why should the gays come out of the closet and further confuse our suspension of disbelief?
