Florida Republican Candidate for Congress says “Acts of Terror are Part of Mainstream Islam”

Brian Mast is a former Special Operations bomb technician who just happens to be running for Congress in Florida’s 18th District. Mast is a decorated veteran who lost both of his legs in an IED explosion while serving in Afghanistan and is hoping to win the seat currently occupied by Democrat Patrick Murphy who plans to run for Senator in 2016.

The Congressional candidate was speaking at a gathering of the Palm Beach County Tea Party recently when the topic of conversation turned to Islam, and the Republican said something that will not make him very popular with Democrats.

The threat of radical Islam is something that we need to acknowledge by name, and we need to attack wherever it rears its ugly head.

The term radical Islam is misused to some degree. The term radical Islam is put on the wrong group. Right now, I believe that it’s radical if we find those among Islam that are willing to actively speak out against the acts of terror that are being committed in that name.

Right now it’s radical to see that. The acts of terror are part of mainstream Islam, because if you are accepting it then you are compliant with it. If you are not speaking out against it, then you are part of the problem, and that to me is mainstream

He’s right, of course. Islamic terrorism is mainstream; what is “radical” in Islam is the willingness to speak out AGAINST terrorism and violence. The Muslim pacifist is the radical. The Muslim willing to coexist peacefully in a Democratic society is the radical.

But don’t take my word for it, read the Pew religion study conducted back in 2013.
