Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) is slowly emerging from the GOP pack as the best and furthest right, conservative candidate. While Cruz has yet to win any major poll across the nation, he has consistently finished in the top four or five along with Donald Trump, Dr. Ben Carson, Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio. Being lumped together with this group allows Cruz to portray himself as clearly the most conservative and experienced of the upper-echelon of GOP candidates.
There is a reason that Cruz is consistently leading the conservative pack. He continues to prove himself as the most conservative, anti-establishment candidate in the field. His latest example of this is an effort that will take him across the country in an all-out siege of Planned Parenthood in America.
U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, who has assiduously courted evangelicals throughout his presidential run, will take a lead role in the launch this week of an ambitious 50-state campaign to end taxpayer support for Planned Parenthood — a move that is likely to give the GOP candidate a major primary-season boost in the fierce battle for social-conservative and evangelical voters.
More than 100,000 pastors received e-mail invitations over the weekend to participate in conference calls with Cruz on Tuesday in which they will learn details of the plan to mobilize churchgoers in every congressional district beginning Aug. 30. The requests were sent on the heels of the Texas Republican’s “Rally for Religious Liberty,” which drew 2,500 people to a Des Moines ballroom Friday.
“The recent exposure of Planned Parenthood’s barbaric practices . . . has brought about a pressing need to end taxpayer support of this institution,” Cruz said in the e-mail call to action distributed by the American Renewal Project, an organization of conservative pastors…
On the campaign trail, Cruz has urged people to watch the controversial Planned Parenthood videos and has repeatedly attacked the Supreme Court, where he once served as a law clerk. In an op-ed in USA Today on Thursday, Cruz wrote that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell shouldn’t schedule or allow any legislation to be heard that would give federal money to Planned Parenthood.
Cruz and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul have each proposed defunding Planned Parenthood and suggested that they would let the government shut down before yielding. Any shutdown would be the fault of Democrats, who’d have to be “willing to try to shut down the government in order to force continued taxpayer funding from an organization that has now been caught on film apparently admitting to multiple felonies,” Cruz, who shot to conservative stardom when he led an effort to shut down the government over funding for the Affordable Care Act, told reporters earlier this month.
At his religious liberty-themed rally in Des Moines on Friday night, Cruz cast himself as the only choice for evangelical voters. There is a “war on faith,” he said, as he quoted scripture and paced the stage like a televangelist; evangelical voters will “stay home no longer.”
This announcement comes on the heels of a recent op-ed that Senator Cruz wrote for USA Today late last week demanding that the federal government stop funding Planned Parenthood. While other candidates (like Rand Paul, Bobby Jindal, Mike Huckabee, and Marco Rubio) have called for an end to federal funding of Planned Parenthood, some of Cruz’s opponents have argued against this. Donald Trump has said that the government should continue funding PP as it does now, and John Kasich recently chided conservatives for wasting their time on abortion.
Cruz rightly argues that abortion is the most important civil rights issue of our day. Where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. fought for the rights of African-Americans, we must fight for the rights of innocent children.
Over the past few weeks, Americans have seen a series of videos come out of Planned Parenthood that are nothing short of horrifying. The footage shows senior Planned Parenthood officials laughing, swilling chardonnay and casually, callously, heartlessly discussing killing unborn children in order to sell their body parts. These videos also force Americans to face the grim reality of what happens to the babies’ remains.
While the sheer candor of these Planned Parenthood officials has shocked most, what is more disturbing is the admission that these barbaric actions are standard practice in some abortion clinics. Worse still, Americans are currently forced to fund the organization that commits these acts. This must end. An organization that generates a large part of its revenue from terminating innocent human life should not receive one penny of taxpayer money and those who engage in what may be criminal activity must be held to account.
For this reason, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell should not schedule or facilitate the consideration of any legislation that gives federal money to Planned Parenthood. Instead, the Department of Justice needs to investigate and prosecute Planned Parenthood for any potential criminal actions of commercial trafficking of fetal organs.
It is mind-boggling that any individual who has seen or knows the details of these videos could support continued taxpayer funding of the abortion industry. Yet still, the billion-dollar Planned Parenthood receives about 45% of its funding from government sources. Planned Parenthood has performed more than a million abortions over the past three years, and its work accounts for nearly one-third of all abortions in the United States.
We are imploring you, dear reader, stand with our pro-life candidates. Stand with Ted Cruz. Together we can stop the American Holocaust that is abortion on demand, and together we can save the lives of millions of innocent children.
