Christianity Free Speech Nanny State Religious Freedom

Pastor to be Prosecuted for Preaching the Evils of Islam in Church

Perhaps you’ve noticed, as I have, that over the last few years we’ve seen the slow and steady creep of fascism in an assault on free speech. Here in the USA the attacks have come mostly from our culture, as intolerant liberals angrily attempt to shout down any dissenting voices by using epithets and ad hominem attacks. Thus far the government (and our courts) have not acted out against free speech, though they have been attacking our freedom to practice our religion. However, in Europe, the assault on free speech has come from both cultural and political sectors, and Christians and conservatives there are having their freedoms destroyed.

In recent years we’ve documented many examples of Christians being confronted by law enforcement for speaking Biblical truths on the streets, and we’ve even covered a case or two of churches being forced to take down signs from their own property. But now, we have the most egregious example of liberal fascism (as an attack on Christianity) yet…

In Northern Ireland a pastor faces prosecution for railing against the evil of Islam in one of his sermons from 2014. Let me repeat: the government is prosecuting a pastor for preaching that another religion is a false religion. Technically, Pastor James McConnell ran afoul of the law when his church streamed the sermon online.

james-mcconnellA Public Prosecution Service spokesperson said that after considering a complaint about “an internet broadcast of a sermon”, it had decided to “offer an individual an informed warning for an offence contrary to the Communications Act 2003”.

“That offence was one of sending, or causing to be sent, by means of a public electronic communications network, a message or other matter that was grossly offensive,” they said.

“The offer of an informed warning was refused by the defendant and accordingly the matter is now proceeding by way of a summary prosecution in the magistrates court.”

Do you realize that most evangelical Christian Pastors who stream their sermon content online could be called criminals under a law like this in America?

Here’s Pastor McConnell saying the “illegal” things he apparently said:

“The Muslim religion was created many hundreds of years after Christ. Muhammad, the Islam Prophet, was born around the year A.D. 570, but Muslims believe that Islam is the true religion,” he preached. “Now, people say there are good Muslims in Britain. That may be so, but I don’t trust them.”

McConnell continued, “Islam’s ideas about God, about humanity, about salvation are vastly different from the teaching of the holy scriptures. Islam is heathen. Islam is satanic. Islam is a doctrine spawned in hell.”

The idea that someone could be prosecuted for saying these things is utterly disgusting. Following the release of this sermon, Pastor McConnell backtracked a bit apologizing for giving offense, but it seems that he has reconsidered his apology and is now standing for what he believes.

“The police tried to shut me up and tell me what to preach. It’s ridiculous. I believe in freedom of speech. I’m going to keep on preaching the gospel,” he said, according to the Guardian. “I have nothing against Muslims, I have never hated Muslims, I have never hated anyone. But I am against what Muslims believe.”

McConnell continued, “They have the right to say what they believe in and I have a right to say what I believe.”

We are living in dangerous and backward times, dear reader. Freedom of speech is under assault, our freedom to practice our faith as we see fit is in danger, and the very freedoms generations of Americans have enjoyed is under threat of disappearing.
