Dueling stories out today from MSNBC and Fox News that should be troubling news for the Hillary Clinton campaign. The most recent polls of voters across the nation, and in particular in battleground states, show that Hillary Clinton is nowhere near as strong as her acolytes would like to think.
NBC’s Kristen Welker was a guest with Thomas Roberts on MSNBC when she brought up the “troubling news” that Bernie Sanders seems to “nipping at” Hillary Clinton’s heels in key swing states.
Bernie Sanders nipping at her heels, picking up many of those progressive voters who would have been Elizabeth Warren supporters. This is troubling for the Clinton campaign. When you talk to campaign officials about it, they say, look, they have been saying since day one that this is not a coronation…
Kristen Welker: I’m told she’s going to get personal today again. She’s going to talk about the fact that her first job after law school was here in South Carolina. Of course this is a new tactic in 2016 as compared to her campaign in 2008. She wants to be more up close and personal with voters this time around.
This campaign stop comes amid some troubling news for the Clinton campaign. According to the latest Quinnipiac poll in three major swing states, Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania, a majority of voters say that they don’t trust her. And then there’s this from New Hampshire. A Suffolk University poll which shows that she is leading Bernie Sanders but only by about 10 points.
Bernie Sanders nipping at her heels, picking up many of those progressive voters who would have been Elizabeth Warren supporters. This is troubling for the Clinton campaign. When you talk to campaign officials about it, they say, look, they have been saying since day one that this is not a coronation, that she is going to earn every vote. Still, this race is becoming increasingly competitive by the day.
Over on Fox News, things did not get any rosier for Clinton as veteran Washington correspondent Ed Henry laid down the unvarnished truth for Team Clinton.
There is one poll the Clinton team woke up to today which was pretty alarming. Bernie Sanders, who has been holding these town halls with thousands of people sometimes, is now just ten points behind in the key state of New Hampshire… Most analysts discount a Democratic Socialist’s chances, but is that poll a smoke signal going out to other powerful Democrats that she could be beatable.
If the polling looks tough for Clinton in the primary, things are getting downright frightening for her in the general election. Recent polling across battleground states shows that every major Republican candidate has been making up ground on Clinton’s early polling lead, and that she has actually fallen behind Republicans in most of these states as well. Team Clinton has every reason to start worrying. I think it will likely be a very long and stressful campaign season for the Democrats.
