Oh, how I wish that this was just a bit of satire. It’s not. President Barack Obama really did just say that the “U.S. Now the Most Respected Country on Earth” under his leadership.
On Tuesday, President Obama welcomed a group of young leaders from the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Fellows Program. The conversation focused on themes of civic engagement, the environment, and entrepreneurship. During a question and answer session with the group, the President was asked about how he would like for the world to remember him and his time as President. Which is when he told them that he wanted Americans to remember him as the President who brought America back to respectability.
“People don’t remember, when I came into office, the United States in world opinion ranked below China, barely above Russia. And today, once again, the United States is the most respected country on earth, and part of that I think is because of the work that we did to reengage the world and say that we want to work with you as partners, with mutual interests and mutual respect.”
I, like the folks at Fox News in the video, have no idea where the President is getting his information on respect. I tend to agree with former Ambassador John Bolton when he says that, “the poll he’s referring to is the poll in his own mind, of what Barack Obama thinks of himself on any given day.” Oh. Snap. Charles Krauthammer went even further saying, “You wonder what world, what planet, he’s living on. It’s not just our enemies who have no respect for us; the Chinese, the Russians, the Iranians of course, or Isis… it’s our allies!”
This little comment from the President is a perfect example of the horribly wrong mindset of the entire Obama administration. He measures his success by what the rest of the world thinks of us, when he should be measuring his success by what Americans think of him. I could not care less if the far-flung people of the world “respect” America. I care if our people are employed, our nation is prospering and our liberties are protected.
Is America free, is America prospering, is America better off today than we were the last generation? These are the questions President Obama should be asking himself… not whether or not the world respect us.
