Obama tells GOP to be “Realists” on Immigration

President Obama was a guest on NPR with Steve Inskeep when he told the GOP that we need to show “realism” and “practicality” on the issue of illegal immigration.

President Obama: If your view is that immigrants are either fundamentally bad to the country or that we actually have the option of deporting 11 million immigrants, regardless of the disruptions, regardless of the cost and that that is who we are as Americans, I reject that.

On the other hand, I think that there are a lot of Republicans who recognize that not only do we need to fix a broken immigration system, strengthen our borders and streamline the legal immigration system, but that we have to show realism, practicality and insist on accountability from those who are here illegally and that the best way to do that is to provide them a path to get legal, paying a fine, submitting to background checks and so forth.

illegalsNPR’s Steve Inskeep: I think that if a Republican lawmaker was sitting here, he might say, “Wait a minute. I’m not captive to nativist elements. I have actual concerns and you’re not addressing them.”

President Obama: Well, the problem is what are those concerns and — and how is it that I’m not addressing them? If — if the concern is border security, we’ve got more resources, more border police, more money being spent at our borders than any time in the last 30, 40 years. If the concern is the flow of illegal workers into the country, that flow is about half of what it was and is lower than any time since the 1970s. So, you know, you have to describe specifically what are the concerns that you’ve got.

Once again President Obama chooses the least productive way to work on a problem. He goes to one of the most liberal media outlets he can find in an effort to “preach to the choir.” illegalOf course, the vast majority of NPR’s listeners agree with the President on immigration issues. Of course, the vast majority of NPR listeners believe the GOP to be the Party of racism and xenophobia… so why not go on there and double-down on those liberal talking points! Who cares if talk like this is exactly the reason that Obama will go down in history as the most divisive President since Abraham Lincoln. (At least Lincoln had a good reason for being so divisive.)

The problem, Mr. President, is that the GOP is not “captive to nativist elements.” The GOP is captive to the law and PRACTICALITY. If we legalize some 5 -12 million illegal immigratns, we are in effect saying to the rest of the possible illegal immigrant population of the world… “Come on Over – there’s no LAW here now!”

While the President may also believe that our border is more secure today than in the past – the facts would argue against him. Border security is more important today than at any point in our history because of the constant threat posed by Islamic terrorism. Contrary to what the President seems to believe, our southern border is a sieve! Hundreds, sometimes thousands, of illegal immigrants cross every day and granting blanket amnesty will only cause those numbers to swell!

President Obama may speak like a mild-mannered moderate – but in reality he is a destructive force of nature that has been loosed to wreak havoc on our nation. No calm, cool and collected conversation on NPR can change that…
