Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN) is no stranger to saying ridiculous and controversial things. (See the time he called Republicans Nazis or the time he told a female reporter that she was very attractive… and there are other examples.)
But he really stepped into a mess this time around.
Our popular culture is currently laser-focused on sexual assault and “rape culture,” so it’s the one topic a politician doesn’t want to say the wrong thing about. Well, he said the wrong thing. Fortunately for Cohen, he’s a Democrat, and the media and feminist culture warriors don’t care when Democrats mess up. They only get mad when Republicans do…
Here’s what Cohen said a few days ago when asked about a sexual assault case involving a Tennessee Titans player.
“I don’t keep up with football, except college football. Unless it’s Eli Manning or Peyton Manning. Eli and Peyton don’t do sexual assaults against people, other than their wives.”
(Enter drum crash – Ba-dum Chhhhh…)
Oh boy. What say you–just a harmless joke?
Let’s play the game though folks, imagine those words coming out of the mouth of Ted Cruz, Rand Paul or some other conservative Republican. Not only would they be denounced as sexists with horrible taste in jokes… they’d also be called racists because the player in question, Sammie Hill, is black, but the players he mentions in response, the Manning brothers… are white.
If you’re waiting for an outrage media to respond… don’t hold your breath.
