Republicans Still Pushing on Benghazi

It’s a difficult way to start a job, but new FBI Director James Comey must have known he’d immediately be under fire. Just days after the new FBI Director was sworn in, a group of eight Republican Congressmen led by Representative Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) have sent him a letter demanding a full briefing on what the FBI is doing about the Benghazi attack in 30 days.

It has been almost a year since the September 11, 2012 attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, yet we are still no closer to understanding what happened on that fateful day. We do know that in the immediate aftermath of the attack and for almost a week later our Government lied to us about what had transpired in Benghazi. Over the last few months we have learned that the government knew within hours of the attack that al-Qaeda was responsible and that it was indeed a “terrorist” attack, not a “spontaneous demonstration.” benghazi changeOur government also scapegoated an innocent American citizen for more than a week, knowing full well he had nothing to do with the incident. The danger to his life that our government created in their desire to find a suitable scapegoat is unconscionable – no matter how politically incorrect his views are.

In the letter, the Republicans complain that no headway has been made in the investigation. “We struggle to understand why we don’t know more about those who attacked two U.S. compounds and murdered four brave Americans… It has been more than 10 months since the attacks. We appear to be no closer to knowing who was responsible today than we were in the early weeks following the attack. This is simply unacceptable. We encourage you to be aggressive in your investigation to properly hold accountable those who attacked our compounds in Benghazi.”

The media has not been consistent in their reporting on the attack and its aftermath. At first it seemed that they would dog the administration until the truth was uncovered, but after the rough treatment of CBS reporter Sharyl Attkisson, it seems that the media has backed off from the story. However, there is new hope the media may be moving again into a more dubious stance toward the White House. CNN’s John King explains:

The American people deserve honesty and transparency from our government. The victims and their families deserve justice. Hopefully Republicans and the media will continue to push until they get the truth from the administration.

(Update) When asked which scandals the President considered “phony”, his spokesman Jay Carney pointed to the IRS and Benghazi scandals. Yep… the President thinks the death of four Americans and our government lying about what happened is a “phony scandal.”
