TMZ is a tabloid magazine/website/show and as such is often derided for its less than kosher content. I understand the desire to make TMZ feel like something less than “real” journalism… but I think that might be a bit unfair. The folks at TMZ work hard to do what they do… and the fact is that millions of people all over the world pay them good money to do it. In that sense, TMZ is the ultimate capitalist success – making millions by providing a service, even as others belittle them for it.
This past week TMZ did something that made me take notice of them for something more than “tabloid” journalism. They took a sledgehammer to Gwyneth Paltrow and the disgusting way our politics have become some kind of freak show at a traveling circus.
Paltrow introduced President Obama at a fundraiser in Hollywood, and let’s just say that the introduction was … embarrassing.
“You’re so handsome that I can’t speak properly… It would be wonderful if we were able to give this man all of the power that he needs to pass the things that he needs to pass.”
However, it was TMZ’s analysis of the entire disgusting display that really was fascinating. This is the kind of analysis that we need more of in the main stream media… but we had to turn to a tabloid to find it.
Paltrow — who hosted the event at her Brentwood home — gushed as she introduced President Obama, “You’re so handsome that I can’t speak properly.”
She then showed utter ignorance about, and contempt for the Constitution and separation of powers — the basic tenets of our government — by saying, “It would be wonderful if we were able to give this man all of the power that he needs to pass the things that he needs to pass.”
It’s the latest example of how demeaning it has become for Presidents to act like circus animals — performing for crowds that will feed them … in this case, feed them with money to line political coffers.
It’s revolting that celebrities and other rich people feel such a need for self-importance — contributing money but ONLY if they can have their picture taken with the president and tell their friends they had dinner with him. If they’re so committed to him, just send him a check and let him stay in Washington and do his job.
Fact is … it has little to do with Obama. It’s about how the celebrity circus has sullied the Presidency of the United States.
We want to praise TMZ in the most visible way possible. Their take on Paltrow and the Obama fundraiser was bar none the best analysis we read of the embarrassing scene in Hollywood. TMZ showed a better grasp of our Constitution, our government, our history and our culture than I’ve found in the pages of CNN, MSNBC and many other mainstream publications, websites and TV stations.
