On Thursday a man in Moore, Oklahoma went on a rampage beheading one woman and attacking another before being stopped.
Alton Nolen, 30, had just been fired from his job at Vaughan Foods when he flipped out and attacked his former coworkers. Using a knife he stabbed 54 year-old Colleen Hufford several times before beheading her. He then attacked 43 year-old Traci Johnson and tried to do the same to her – thankfully, the company’s Chief Operating Officer, Mark Vaughn, was nearby and armed. He shot Nolen before he could kill Johnson, though she did suffer several stab wounds. (Police say both Johnson and her attacker should be fine.)
But that isn’t the end of the story.
See, Mr. Nolen is a Muslim who had been talking about Islam with his coworkers for weeks in an effort to see them converted. While the firing may have set him off, it’s disturbing to see his willingness to hurt the very people he was trying to win over.
Moore Police Sgt. Jeremy Lewis said Friday that the suspect Alton Alexander Nolen, 30, entered the Vaughan Foods processing plant in Moore, Oklahoma on Thursday and beheaded 54 year-old Colleen Hufford.
Nolen had recently been trying to convert his co-workers at the company to Islam, Lewis said Friday, according to interviews with the company’s workers.
After stabbing and beheading Colleen Hufford, Nolen began to do the same to 43 year-old Traci Johnson, but was stopped when the company’s chief operating officer, Mark Vaughn, who also serves as a reserve sheriff’s deputy, shot and injured Nolen.
“This was not going to stop if he didn’t stop it,” Lewis said of Vaughan’s intervention. “It could have gotten a lot worse.”
From police statements about what they’ve learned, Nolen did not begin attacking people immediately upon being fired. He was let go in an office building that houses the Human Resources office; he then drove to the entrance of the business before entering the processing plant where he attacked his helpless coworkers.
This is the second case of a Muslim man killing non-Muslims here in the USA that we’ve covered in the last week. Canada, France, Germany and England have already been dealing with similar cases for the last few years – are we destined to see these incidents increase?
Correction: It seems that while Mr. Nolen had been proselytizing his coworkers – there is no evidence that the two women he attacked had discussed Islam with him.
