Count Pat Buchanan among those who are fairly certain that we will see a “Romney Revival” in 2016, as the former Republican Governor of Massachusetts makes another attempt to win the White House.
Buchanan was a guest on this past weekend’s episode of The McLaughlin Group on PBS. It was there that he laid this bombshell on American Voters (particularly Republican voters who may be tiring of candidate Mitt).
“There is no doubt Jeb Bush, Chris Christie and Mitt Romney are in the establishment category or bracket that are headed for the finals,” Buchanan said. “I think Mitt would come out first but I really don’t see Bush as really having the drive or inner drive. And I think, then you get Mitt Romney against someone like a Cruz, or someone like that, and I think that would be the finals. And I think that Mitt has got it in his heart to do this thing.”
“The only cure for presidential fever is embalming fluid. I think he’s going to run,” Buchanan told host John McLaughlin.
Look, I think that Mitt Romney would have been a much better choice for President than Barack Obama. That doesn’t mean I want to see him run in 2016. We have much better candidates today than we did four years ago, and there is no need for Mitt to be “the guy” in 2016. A new generation of conservative Republicans have come into their own and taken their place among our political leadership – these are the folks we should be looking to lead us. Let’s just let Mitt fade into history, shall we?
For his part, Mitt denies that he’s considering another run for the White House… but then he takes a parting shot at Hillary Clinton, which makes us like him even more.
“I’ve spoken on this topic so many times, I don’t really have anything new to do add,” Romney said. “I’m not running, I’m not planning on running.”
“There’s no question in my mind that I think I would have been a better president than Barack Obama has been,” Romney said. “I wish it were me. But my time has come — come and gone. I had that opportunity. I ran, I didn’t win. Now it’s time for someone else to pick up the baton.”
“When the president is weak, bad people do bad things,” he said, taking two swipes at Obama’s golf game, and denounced Obama for not calling Russia’s incursion into eastern Ukraine an invasion. “If you can’t speak decisively, you can’t be decisive.”
And then here is what he said about the possibility of Hillary Clinton running for President again in 2016.
“Her record is Barack Obama’s record on foreign policy, and it’s a disaster,” he said. “Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are two peas in the same pod, and the American people have tasted that, and said look, that’s not a good taste.”
