The Bible and Israel vs. Hamas

This article is not about who is right or wrong in the ongoing Israeli-Hamas-Palestinian conflict. It’s about a religious belief that is being used to justify the conflict based on Genesis 12:3. Does this passage apply to what prophecy aficionados claim for it? I don’t believe it does.

Every nation has a right to defend itself against another nation or organization that wants to wipe it off the face of the earth. The principle of self-defense applies to everybody equally.

It can’t be said based on Genesis 12:3 that Israel can do whatever it wants because it has a particular promise from God. If this is the case, then even God was wrong when He judged Israel at times. Sometimes Israel is right and sometimes Israel is wrong. The same is true of all nations.

Laurie Cardoza-Moore writes, “In Genesis 12:3, God states his blessing for those who bless His people and His land as well as the curse for those who go against His people. This curse has played out through time from the extinct Philistines to the destruction of Nazi Germany.”
Now, I’m not for cursing any nation, but the above passage is not about cursing or blessing a people or a nation in the 21st century. The “you” is singular. God is talking to and about Abram, later to be named Abraham:

“Now the Lord said to Abram, ‘Go forth from your country,
And from your relatives
And from your father’s house,
To the land which I will show you;

And I will make you a great nation,
And I will bless you,
And make your name great;
And so you shall be a blessing.’”

If this is about blessing the offspring of Abraham, then the descendants of Ishmael must also be included because they are also the offspring of Abraham (Gen. 17:20).
