Orson Scott Card is one of the most famous names in science fiction. He is the critically acclaimed author of many books, short stories and articles. His latest triumph is getting his most famous book “Ender’s Game” made into a big budget Hollywood blockbuster. However, if gay marriage proponents have their way, Mr. Card will be blacklisted from all future forays into major Hollywood movie productions.
A group calling itself Geek OUT, is asking supporters to boycott the upcoming film, even though Ender’s Game is one of the most beloved science fiction books of the last thirty years.
“By pledging to Skip Ender’s Game, we can send a clear and serious message to Card and those that do business with his brand of anti-gay activism — whatever he’s selling, we’re not buying… The queer geek community will not subsidize his fear-mongering and religious bullying. We will not pay him to demean, insult, and oppress us… Do not buy a ticket at the theater, do not purchase the DVD, do not watch it on-demand. Ignore all merchandise and toys.”
Card, who is a devout Mormon, responded to his critics directly and noted that they had already won the fight over the issue, so their boycott and angst over his position is moot.
“Ender’s Game is set more than a century in the future and has nothing to do with political issues that did not exist when the book was written in 1984. With the recent Supreme Court ruling, the gay marriage issue becomes moot. The Full Faith and Credit clause of the Constitution will, sooner or later, give legal force in every state to any marriage contract recognized by any other state. Now it will be interesting to see whether the victorious proponents of gay marriage will show tolerance toward those who disagreed with them when the issue was still in dispute.” – Orson Scott Card
His response has not done much to quell the negative press emanating from the left, as publications like Huffington Post continue to publicize the call for the boycott of Ender’s Game.
Card does make an interesting and provocative point as he wonders about whether the left will show “tolerance” to those who disagreed with them. I think the answer is clear. As we have learned over the years, Leftist’s neither forgive nor forget. In any battle, whether they are victorious or defeated, they will take their pound of flesh.
I don’t think Card should expect anything less than a full-frontal assault on his upcoming movie. Things may quiet down a bit over the summer, but in the end, the LGBT community will show up on the red carpet for the premiere and they will make sure that the world know just how they feel about Orson Scott Card.
Remember the motto of the left: “Tolerance of intolerance can never be tolerated.”
Oh, and do go see Ender’s Game when it comes out on November 1, 2013… the trailer looks awesome!
