In the summers of 2009 and 2010, the Tea Party was about to reach its zenith of influence and remake the political landscape in a country that just two years prior seemed headed towards a permanent Democrat majority. We conservatives and the Republican Party owe a great deal to the work done by tireless tea party supporters. So why has the establishment worked so hard to exclude Alaskan Joe Miller from the Republican ticket?
In 2010, Joe Miller was one of the most popular tea party candidates in the country. He was well spoken, intelligent, and knew how to connect with a crowd. Everywhere that Miller went, he seemed to build a vocal following; that is until the Republican establishment in Alaska decided they preferred liberal RINO Lisa Murkowski to Miller. In a hard fought primary to see who would wear the Republican mantle in the Senate race, Miller barely defeated Murkowski.
Lisa Murkowski and the Republican leadership in Alaska were having none of it.
Murkowski and the establishment decided that they knew better than the Republican voters of Alaska, and in the end, Murkowski ran in the Senate race as an Independent. With Democrat support, she beat Miller by a small margin. In 2012, President Obama was only able to take 41% of the vote in Alaska, but the Democrat Senate candidate in 2010 only took 23% of the vote. Murkowski was able to parlay much of that Democrat vote into a Senate seat, and her votes in the Senate since show she holds no allegiance to the Republican Party.
Murkowski was ranked as the 3rd most liberal Republican in the Senate by the National Journal, and now that Scott Brown (R-MA) is no longer in the Senate, she would be 2nd to only Susan Collins of Maine. Murkowski is so liberal she makes Lindsey Graham look like a tough Conservative…and that is disgusting.
Joe Miller will once again attempt to win a Senate seat in Alaska in 2014, and I think that we conservatives need to start ramping up our support of him now. Alaska is a deeply red state and it is ridiculous that the Party establishment there has been allowed to push corrupt or liberal politicians on the people of the state election after election. Alaskans – take action now, and make sure your party’s leaders don’t screw up 2014 the way they did 2010.
