Residents Blame Houston Mayor for Failing the City After Discouraging Evacuation

Texas Govenor Greg Abbott gave  warning for people to leave before Hurricane Harvey hit on Friday.

Unfortunately, many people did not evacuate and they believe the Houston mayor has a part to play in that. There have been reported deaths caused by the hurricane and post-flooding,. Numerous people are still stranded roofs or wading through flood waters, waiting for help.

Political commentator Kristen Tate is a resident of Houston, and she feels as if Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner has “completely failed the city.” He advised residents to “think twice” about evacuating, contradicting what Abbott already told people.

Turner Tweeted:

Tate said, “He didn’t even call for a voluntary evacuation,” she continued, “We were getting mixed messages.” She believes more people would have evacuated and made it to safety if they’d been correctly advised. However, they were made to believe that it was not going to be as bad as reported.

Fox News Insider reports:

“Even if an evacuation order hasn’t been issued by your local official, if you’re in an area between Corpus Christi and Houston, you need to strongly consider evacuating,” the governor said.

“We certainly didn’t know the hurricane would be this bad, but a city should always be prepared for the worst,” Tate told Fox Business on Monday.

Tate said her friends who stayed in the city wish they had left.

Tate concluded, “I think we can blame [the mayor] for at least some of the suffering we’re seeing.”

She is not entirely wrong either. Some people would have stayed regardless, but had they known the true danger, more evacuations would have taken place. More evacuations would mean less deaths and less people stranded during the crisis.
