Los Angeles Mayor Fears Violence Against ICE

Written by Joe Scudder

The Los Angeles mayor admits that his city holds a large and potentially dangerous illegal population.

In a radio interview, Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti warned of violent rioting if Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) enforced immigration law. In fact, he invoked the specter of the 1992 riots in response to the Rodney King verdict. Garcetti was trying to get his listeners to oppose ICE raids, but in the process he implicitly told us that non-enforcement of immigration law has led to a large and potentially dangerous population in the city.

The Hill reports, “LA mayor: Immigration arrests could cause a ‘tinderbox.’” But the headline is confused. Garcetti is admitting that the tinderbox is already here. He is warning against igniting it by deporting illegal aliens.

“If something goes wrong, I fear a tinderbox out there, you know where people will suddenly say ‘no’ and try to defend. You know, keep that person from being taken,” Garcetti told Latino USA.

“That’s a very dangerous situation. That’s dangerous for those officers. That’s dangerous for those agents. And we’re going to have to respond.”
