A video recently released by Ukranian media is important evidence of what can happen when a nation is to slow to react to government overreach. In recent days the Ukraine has been a hotbed of unrest as the Ukranian government has chosen to break ties with Europe and begin shifting toward realignment with Russia. The memories of Soviet control are still alive in the Ukraine, and the people want no part of Russia. Months of protests have led the government to enact stringent anti-protest laws that the US State Department says basically outlaws any form of peaceful protest.
These new laws have served to enrage the population, and violent clashes have become the norm in Kiev, the capital of the Ukraine. Video and pictures have been flowing out of the nation through the European media, and it is not a pretty scenario. Some have even described the clashes as “medieval.”
In a statement Wednesday, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf condemned the growing violence, particularly against journalists and peaceful protesters.
“Increased tensions in Ukraine are a direct consequence of the Ukrainian government’s failure to engage in real dialogue and the passage of anti-democratic legislation on January 16,” Harf said. “We urge the Government of Ukraine to take steps that represent a better way forward for Ukraine, including repeal of the anti-democratic legislation and beginning a national dialogue with the political opposition.”
Taking their cue from the government and likely because of frustration with the protests, stories are also being told of police brutality and government violence against the protesters. That’s where this video comes in. It doesn’t take much for a police force to go from “serve and protect” to “dominate and control” – especially with a corrupt government at the helm.
The people of the Ukraine could have prevented this. They should have paid attention to the leaders they were electing and the moves they made leading up to their move toward Russia. This is what happens when low information voters control the outcome of an election. Apathetic voters who know better allow the ignorant to make decisions that will affect everything… I pray that we in America learn this lesson now, before things get even worse.
