NBC Sports Writer Says American Flag has no Place in Athletics: ‘We Like Sports to be Politics-free’

Written by Onan Coca

NBC’s Craig Calcaterra has, until now, been known as a solid baseball writer.
From this point on, he’ll likely be known as the douchebag who thinks that the American flag should be banned from sporting events because it’s too “political.”

This one, seemingly innocuous tweet, set off a firestorm of (rightly deserved) criticism.

Calcaterra tried to play the entire thing off, arguing that the people criticizing him were simply too-easily triggered, right-wingers.

But the simple truth is that the people criticizing Calcaterra today are right, there is simply nothing political about the American flag. It’s the symbol of our nation and has been for over 200 years. It flies outside of the homes of Democrats and Republicans alike, it flies at every state capitol, it is draped over every soldiers casket, and it appears on all of our money, documents, government buildings, and more. While nationalism may be a controversial topic, patriotism is not supposed to be.

Are there honestly liberals out there who believe that the Atlanta Braves flying an American flag on Opening Day is “political”? That simply seems impossible to believe… and yet, here we have Craig Calcaterra actually making that case.

We live in a completely backward day and time – where a whole swath of Americans believe things that are not just wrong, but completely and utterly moronic.
