The media are kind of treating this incident as if it’s some sort of hate crime. The ‘shocking and unusual’ incident was that someone had found copies of the Quran in toilets at the University of Texas, Dallas.
A student noticed the ‘anti-Muslim’ act, took some pictures for documentation, and reported it to campus security. They got the police involved, and now they’re on the lookout for the ‘suspect’ in the ‘anti-Muslim’ ‘hate crime’ by reviewing surveillance footage. The Dallas-Fort Worth NBC affiliate reported:
UT Dallas junior Mohammad Syed, a Muslim, said he didn’t believe the news until he saw photos published in the student newspaper.
“It’s definitely saddening and a little disturbing as well,” said Syed, who is the President of the UT Dallas Muslim Student Association. “It’s something that we do not expect to happen, especially at this campus.”
Syed said he’s always known UT Dallas as a diverse and inclusive place, which was the one of the things that drew him to pursue a degree in neuroscience there.
“UT Dallas is a very welcoming environment,” he said. “And I have nothing but good things to say about it.”
And that won’t change despite this incident.
“You know, while there is a little voice of hate, there is an overwhelming voice of love and support [here] and we definitely appreciate that,” said Syed. “And I’m very happy to say I’m a student, a Comet, over here at UTD.”
UT Dallas Police say they are reviewing surveillance video from inside the Student Union building.
They acknowledge they haven’t found “anything out of the ordinary” for now, but say they’re taking this matter seriously and will continue to investigate.
Is it just me, or is this kind of a non-story? Would there be an outrage and police manhunt if a student had spotted Bibles in toilets? I seriously doubt it.
But someone sees Qurans in the toilet and feels like the police need to be notified? Seems a bit overkill.
I would speculate that the perpetrator was a Muslim or at least a liberal trying to garner sympathy for Islam, but there just isn’t that much there. Usually, the fake hate crimes are more serious, and are manifested in (self-inflicted) physical injuries.
This sounds more like a prank.
