According to Kentucky Senator Rand Paul , the GOP leadership’s bill – which doesn’t actually repeal Obamacare – is ‘dead on arrival.’
Many people have criticized the conservative wing of the Republican Party for not going along with the leadership’s bill. They think the leadership should be trusted to do what they’ve promised to do. I mean, they have such a great track record of following through on their promises, so why not trust them, right?
I’ve heard the leadership’s position, voiced by Paul Ryan and defended by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, and I think it goes without saying that I don’t trust them. The fact that the big government Republicans are trying to stonewall conservatives like Rand Paul and trying to get the White House to support Obamacare Lite with no debate shows how untrustworthy they are.
The leadership is saying that Rand Paul doesn’t have the votes to get his more free market-driven bill passed. But Rand Paul says the same thing about Obamacare 2.0. He says it’s dead on arrival, and that the leadership might as well scrap it and start all over again. And not only that, he and the rest of the conservative wing of the Republican Party will be “withholding our vote”:
“The problem is that they’ve brought forward things that are very controversial, and that conservatives don’t like. Conservatives hate their bill. I promise you, Obamacare Lite – dead on arrival. They might as well just start over. You’re hearing other voices. I’m not the only voice saying this. And so what they should do is clean it up, get rid of the Obamacare Lite stuff – get rid of the taxes, the subsidies, the mandates, the bailouts, and just do repeal.
“The speaker needs to bring people into the room, conservatives, and he needs to hear what we want. We are withholding our vote. This is a message for the Speaker. We are withholding our vote. We want a seat at the table.”
