Texas has become the vanguard of conservative policies in recent years, as the state has moved forward with conservative principles on many fronts and for the most part moved ahead successfully.
On jobs, taxes and small business, Texas has built in great freedom for its people. At a time when the country has been struggling fiscally, Texas has been a model of prosperity.
Well the Lone Star State is at it again, but this time they have taken up the banner for conservatives on abortion.
With over one million abortions performed in the United States every year, it is my contention that we have lost the moral high ground on human rights issues in a world that desperately needs someone to provide a moral compass. We are living witnesses to a holocaust being perpetrated on our watch, with our money, while destroying our children.
The good people of Texas have had enough.
During a special legislative session, the congressmen and women who represent the citizens of Texas have taken up the issue of abortion and are about to pass a comprehensive set of laws that could effectively outlaw abortion in Texas!
The only thing standing in their way is a Democratic procedural filibuster, which can scuttle the legislation completely. The filibuster is likely to work because the chosen speaker Sen. Wendy Davis, D-Fort Worth, “only” needs to last 13 hours.
Republicans can get this legislation through the Senate if Governor Rick Perry orders a second special session, and there are high hopes that he will.
I write to congratulate the people of Texas and their Representatives for their courage and their fortitude. I also think that this strategy that they have taken up, to work to outlaw abortion in their state, is the strategy that we conservatives should encourage throughout the nation.
We must forgo trying to pass sweeping federal legislation that in the end would likely be struck down by the Supreme Court anyway. Our greatest opportunities lie in working with individual states to make abortion laws much more stringent.
Roe v. Wade has stymied our efforts to save America’s children from wholesale slaughter, but the ruling can only keep us from legally outlawing abortion. It cannot infringe on the rights of states to make laws restricting abortions, and so this is our path.
Conservatives, now is the time to rally together, to use Texas’ example and to see this accomplished. We can effectively destroy abortion in conservative states, and while we may not be able to save every child, we can stop the murder of hundreds of thousands each year. This is a cause worth fighting for.
