According to Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ), it’s not that the Democrats are being ‘obstructionists’ with President Trump’s cabinet picks. It’s that the President is trying to ram through his choices, without letting the Senate vet them. I guess the senate Democrats are in favor of extreme vetting after all, but only when it comes to Trump’s cabinet appointees.
Booker sees the irony the other way. He says that Trump wants extreme vetting for certain refugees, but he doesn’t want any vetting for his nominees. Here’s what Booker had to say in an interview with Bill Ritter of ABC7:
Well, numerous presidents in the past – even most recent presidents – [unintelligible] all approved until March.
We’re not being obstructionists. I read the Constitution very plainly. I am supposed to advise and consent. And I’m going to do everything I can to make sure that we have a thorough vetting of candidates, opportunities to speak about these issues on the floor, and ultimately to give our consent.
And frankly, what the Trump administration is doing, contrary to that, is that they’re trying to ram these nominees through without a thorough vetting. And here’s Donald Trump calling for extreme vetting of refugees, but he doesn’t even want usual vetting they usually get for nominees. It’s unacceptable.
