John Lewis Lied About This Being the First Inauguration He’ll Miss…He Boycotted Bush’s Also

Written by Philip Hodges

The lie was so big that even Politifact rated it “Pants on Fire.” They even went so far as to say that Trump’s tweet calling John Lewis out on his lie was “accurate.”

It was in an interview with Chuck Todd on Meet the Press that Representative John Lewis (D-GA) said that Trump is not a legitimate president, and that he would not be attending his inauguration. In addition, Lewis said that it “will be the first one that I miss since I’ve been in Congress.” Here’s Politifact:

Lewis didn’t attend President George W. Bush’s inauguration in 2001. Bush prevailed after a weeks-long, controversy-laden recount that ended with a 5-4 Supreme Court decision.

A contemporary Washington Post article included this paragraph: “Some members of the Black Caucus decided to boycott Inauguration Day; John Lewis, for instance, spent the day in his Atlanta district. He thought it would be hypocritical to attend Bush’s swearing-in because he doesn’t believe Bush is the true elected president.”

Ah ha. Bush wasn’t the “true elected president.” Sound familiar?

President-elect Donald Trump sat down in an interview with Fox News about this ordeal. Here’s how his exchange went with FOX and Friends’ Ainsley Earhardt:

AINSLEY EARHARDT: Congressman Lewis is saying he didn’t remember that he skipped [President George W. Bush’s] inauguration.

PRESIDENT-ELECT DONALD TRUMP: Well, yeah. He conveniently doesn’t remember. How do you forget if you go to an inauguration? I can tell you when I was at the inaugurations and you don’t forget something like that.

So he got caught and it’s pretty bad. And it’s making him look bad, frankly.

It’s a very important time. This is a transition, and a very important transition. And especially because things will be done beautifully but they will be done differently than they have been over the past 8 years, and I can say over the past 16 years, there will be a difference. And we have to have a smooth transition. And President Obama understands that very well and that’s why he’s been so gracious and he understands that.

And I think for him to have grandstanded, because I think he just grandstanded, John Lewis, and then he got caught in a very bad lie. So let’s see what happens. As far as other people not going, that’s OK, because we need seats so badly. I hope they give me their tickets. Are they going to give us their tickets or are they going to give them to other people? No, what happens to their tickets? I hope they’re gonna give us their tickets.
