House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) has stated that the House will work to defund Planned Parenthood. Predictably, Democrats have come out saying that the world will end if Planned Parenthood stops receiving federal funding.
The abortion provider’s CEO Cecile Richards went so far as to say that maternal mortality rates would increase. In addition, she said that without Planned Parenthood receiving taxpayer money, unintended pregnancies would increase, something she regarded as ironic.
Here’s what she said in an interview with CNN’s Erin Burnett:
CECILE RICHARDS: We provide abortion services, but we provide millions of other services. We think it’s important, it’s a legal service women need access to in this country.
What Speaker Ryan is trying to do here and what Vice President, incoming Vice President Pence is trying to do is end access to everything that would prevent unintended pregnancy in this country, including family planning services. That’s the real irony here.
We have seen what’s happened in states like Texas where they’ve ended access to family planning services, to cancer screenings. We just saw in Texas a doubling of a maternal mortality rate for women, particularly low-income women, African-American women who have the least access to care.
Ironically, I think what they’re trying to do will, if anything, drive up the rate of unintended pregnancy in this country and have exactly the opposite impact of what supposedly they intend.
I hope House Republicans are serious about defunding Planned Parenthood.
While Richards brings up the alleged increase in maternal mortality in Texas following the passing of that state’s abortion restrictions – a cause and effect that isn’t even true – pro-abortion activists never bring up the fact that they’re killing babies. They claim to be in favor of women’s health and all that, but their business is built on the murder of unborn children.
Of course, they don’t refer to it as murder. Murder is after all illegal, and abortion is legal. Therefore, abortion is not murder. Or so their reasoning goes. Abortion’s legality is based solely on semantics.
