Liberal Democrats must be freaking out right about now. Civil Rights icon and one of the greatest football players of all time, Jim Brown, had nothing but praise for Donald Trump while discussing their recent meeting on CNN.
In fact, Brown told CNN’s Brooke Baldwin that Mr. Trump had won him over, going so far as to say that “I fell in love with him,” and that Trump had earned Brown’s “admiration.”
Jim Brown: We’re not bourgeoisie, we’re not above the people. But I feel in love with him because he really talks about helping African-America, black people, and that’s why I’m here…
Well, it isn’t really just about Donald Trump. It’s about him in the position he occupies. That position is considered the most important person in the world. The most powerful person in the world is supposed to be the president. When he goes through what he went through to become the president he got my admiration because no one gave him a chance. You know, they called him names. People that called him names when he won, he reached back and brought them along with him. He held no grudges. So who am I to say I played quarterback when I played running back? I don’t know everything and I don’t try to address everything, but the reception that I got today from him I will always remember that because he listened to us and he knows that we can bring something to him to help the people of this country.
In a later interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Brown continued to gush over the President-elect, even arguing that anyone going against him now is also going “against America.”
Anderson Cooper: You were a Hillary Clinton supporters, is that right?
Jim Brown: Yes.
Anderson Cooper: I’m wondering if — was that, you know, there were a lot of Clinton supporters who are upset obviously about the result of the election or depressed about it. You are willing to give him a chance. You are willing — this is the president now. This is everybody’s president. You’re willing to let him — to try to work with him.
Jim Brown: Well in my opinion, people that go against the election are going against America. We have free elections. Everybody can vote, we fought for that, we brag about that and we know we’re going to have a winner and we’re going to have a loser.
So my point is, if we respect the winner and approach that person, have access to that person and that person will look at what we are presenting, that is not too bad. And I could have set back and said well Hillary didn’t win, I’m just going to sit on my butt and complain. But see the one thing about this country, if you get off your butt and you apply yourself, you can be successful. But if you want to be delivered? You’re talk about the wrong country.
Brown also explained to Cooper how it was that Mr. Trump finally won him over.
Anderson Cooper: How did this meeting come about? What did you want to talk to the president elect about?
Jim Brown: About the state of black America. And I’ve been working on that for many, many years. And he said certain things in his early days about wanting to do something about it. We have a lot of violence in our neighborhoods now. We need education. And we need jobs. Is what I’m trying to say.
Anderson Cooper: What kind of a response did you get from him today?
Jim Brown: Totally positive. He’s almost like two people, you know, he’s — was very receptive. Funny. Cracked some jokes. And understand it very well. And said he was in that he would work with us.
Anderson Cooper: During the campaign he talked about reaching out to African- American voters in particular. He talked about inner cities in a way that did offend some people. Lot of Democrats. Some African- Americans of saying what have you got to lose. What have the Democrats ever done for you that your schools aren’t working? Can’t get jobs. Can’t get an education. You know, you get killed on the streets. Did — during the campaign, did that stand out to you at all? What did you think of that and what did you think of how you saw him today?
Jim Brown: Well, I tell you something, I saw all of it. And a lot of it, I understood because of his personality. He’s different. And for years the presidency has been like a smooth ride and nothing really dramatic has happened. But with him every day is full of energy. Things are going the happen. And today when I met him, it was like meeting a different person.
