This is the kind of bipartisan agreement I can support.
On Monday the House of Representatives unanimously passed a resolution labeling ISIS’ attack on Christians in Syria and Iraq as “genocide.” The hope is that the move will force the Obama administration to stop dithering on the issue and to take a stand – something that the President and his Secretary of State, John Kerry, have been reticent to do.
Republicans and Democrats in the House joined together 393-0 to back a “sense of Congress” saying the crimes committed against Christians, Yezidis and other ethnic and religious minorities in the region amount to war crimes and in some cases, genocide.
Representative Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE), who authored the resolution with California Democrat Anna Eshoo, said, “This is threat against civilization itself when a group of people, ISIS — 8th century barbarians with 21st century weaponry — can systematically try to exterminate another group of people simply because of their faith tradition violating the scared space of individuality, conscience and religious liberty, you undermine the entire system of international order.” Another California Democrat, Brad Sherman, agreed with Fortenberry adding, “It is clear that as least some of the war crimes are part of a planned genocide against the religious minorities in areas that ISIS occupies.”
Conservatives joined with liberals to cheer the move by the House.
Congressman Jim Bridenstine (R-OK):
Tonight I will be voting to approve a resolution declaring that ISIS is committing genocide against Christians in the Middle East. Reports indicate that the Obama administration will fail to meet a congressional deadline requiring the President to publicly state the same.
Our Presidents refusal to take a vocal stand against this behavior from ISIS is unacceptable, and only emboldens our enemy to go further.
Congressman Tom Graves (R-GA):
The Islamic State is committing genocide against Christians, Yazidis and other groups in Iraq and Syria. The United States must recognize, through an official judgment, the reality of the horrific tragedy taking place so we can be honest about what’s necessary to destroy the Islamic State and end their reign of terror. I urge the administration to quit living in denial and join the House in making the determination that the Islamic State is committing genocide.
ISIS is a collection of despicable and violent terrorists. Their actions are vile and they deserve every ounce of scorn that we can muster. There should be no doubt or debate about what they are attempting to do; their goal is the domination of a planet and the mass extinction of every non-Muslim. It’s time that we stood together against the threat that they represent, even if Barack Obama and John Kerry choose not to get involved.
