Sad news for conservative Constitution lovers everywhere. Justice Antonin Scalia has passed away.
Justice Scalia was on vacation in West Texas when he passed away of natural causes. He arrived at a the Cibolo Creek Ranch on Friday with a large party, but did not arrive for breakfast on Saturday morning.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott released a statement on Saturday afternoon calling Justice Scalia a man of God, a patriot, and an “unwavering defender of the written Constitution.”
“He was the solid rock who turned away so many attempts to depart from and distort the Constitution. We mourn his passing, and we pray that his successor on the Supreme Court will take his place as a champion for the written Constitution and the Rule of Law. Cecilia and I extend our deepest condolences to his family, and we will keep them in our thoughts and prayers,” Abbott said.
Justice Scalia was a reliable Constitutional conservative who most often voted with Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito against the liberal bent of the other court members. This tragic news means that President Obama may get another opportunity to name a liberal Justice to the Supreme Court. But he may not have enough time to push his nominee through before the next Presidential election. Congress may attempt to stall the appointment until the next President takes office.
We offer our prayers and condolences to Justice Scalia’s loved ones. Our nation has lost a powerful voice for Constitutional principles, and we are worse off for it.
