Donald Trump Promises “Forward Motion on Equality for Gays”!

I’m not sure anyone will actually be surprised by this, and I’m not sure any of Donald Trump’s supporters will leave him because he said it… but I feel like I need to report on it.

Donald Trump recently gave an interview with New England Cable News’ (NECN) Sue O’Connell, and during that interview he argued that he could be a “uniter” on gay, lesbian and transgender issues. O’Connell is a lesbian who has been an active advocate in her community, which is what led her to ask if President Trump would be a friend to the homosexual and transgender community.

“When President Trump is in office can we look for more forward motion on equality for gays and lesbians?” O’Connell asked him.

“Well, you can,” Trump answered. ” And look, again, we’re going to bring people together, and thats your thing and other people have their thing. We have to bring all people together and if we don’t we’re not going to have a country anymore.”

Trump did add that he did not support gay marriage“I’m not in favor of gay marriage,” he’s said. “I don’t feel right about” marriage equality, he’s also said.

O’Connell’s other news outlet, Bay Windows, mentioned that while Mr. Trump has articulated anger with women, Muslims and illegal immigrant populations, he has never said anything that might rile the LGBT community. This friendliness has been noted by the other GOP candidates; for instance, it may have been what Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) was implying when he mentioned Mr. Trump’s “New York Values.”

This isn’t the first time that Mr. Trump has insinuated that his position on gay marriage (among other LGBT issues) wasn’t in line with the GOP base.

When asked on MSNBC by Thomas Roberts about his position on gay marriage Trump replied, “I think that it’s an evolving process, Thomas. Now, of course, the United States is ahead of Russia when it comes to this stuff.” Earlier in 1999, on NBC’s Meets the Press, in a now infamous interview with Tim Russert, he refused to commit to a position on gay marriage, telling Russert only that it was too “premature” for him to comment on the subject. (This was the same interview where Trump argued in defense of partial birth abortion and other liberal talking points).

This is just another example of Donald Trump’s leftward lean, but I’m not really sure that his supporters care.
