Michigan Representative Justin Amash (R-MI) is a rising star within conservative and libertarian Republican circles. He has proven to be a man of his word and uncompromising in his principles. He has stuck to his promises so severely that his own party stripped him of this leadership opportunities when he wouldn’t vote against his principles.
Back in September he told a panel on ABC’s This Week With George Stephanopoulos show that the GOP would be doing President Obama and the Democrats a “favor” by delaying Obamacare. Every member of the panel laughed at him when he said it – but they’re probably not laughing now.
“Part of compromise means that when you want to borrow more money, we’re going to have to have some cuts in government,” Amash said. “That’s all Republicans are asking for. We’re not talking about draconian cuts. We’re talking about delaying Obamacare. Which is something the president has asked for with the employer mandate. So let’s delay it for everyone. I think we’re doing the president a favor if we delay it. The program is not ready to be implemented. If anything the president should be asking us to delay it because it’s better for him politically.”
With the advantage of a couple of months of hindsight, all of the worries and concerns that the GOP had about Obamacare have proven to be true. In reality Rep. Amash was completely correct in saying that the GOP would have been helping President Obama and the Democrats if they delayed Obamacare’s release.
Obamacare has become an albatross around the neck of the Democrat Party and many of their members from more conservative states and districts are attempting to escape from beneath its burden.
Exit question – does Obamacare’s massive failure mean the public wants Republicans to move healthcare in a more conservative direction, or do they want something even more socialized?
