One of the GOP candidates for President just said something spectacularly impolitic and seemingly absolutely correct.
During a speech in Sioux City, Iowa on Saturday Donald Trump could be heard bragging about how great his campaign was doing, then illustrating his success with a simple example.
“You know what else they say about my people?
The polls, they say I have the most loyal people.
Did you ever see that?
Where I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose any voters, okay?
It’s like incredible,” Trump bellowed.
Sadly, I don’t think Trump is wrong.
Consider all of the missteps he’s already taken in this campaign.
Whether it was saying that John McCain isn’t a war hero (because he was captured), or that he’s never asked God forgiveness, or implying something disgusting about Megyn Kelly, or mocking a disabled journalist, or calling Carly Fiorina ugly, or calling for Universal Healthcare, or raising taxes on the wealthy, or continuing to fund Planned Parenthood, or on and on and on.
Donald Trump has become bullet-proof with his voters.
His anecdote is a bit over-the-top, but I don’t think he’s that far off.
So what does this attitude among GOP voters say about our country and about our Party?
